Satellite Reign – A Cyberpunk Open World RTS

The Kickstarter for this game, Satellite Reign, really got my attention. It’s a game by 5 Lives Studios, spearheaded by the creator of Syndicate Wars, Mike Diskett. Open world? RTS? CYBERPUNK? It all sounds too good to be true, but this is from the creator of Syndicate Wars and his new team of some passionate industry veterans. Here’s a quick snippet from the Kickstarter page:

“Satellite Reign is a real-time, class-based strategy game. You control a team of four agents, each with distinct and unique abilities, collectively battling for control of a fully simulated, living cyberpunk city.

The game world is designed to facilitate emergent gameplay, giving you the tools and freedom to play how you want to play, so you can create strategies and scenarios that not even we had anticipated!

Customise your team with the strength to destroy your enemies head-on, or hack into their facilities to manipulate their infrastructure without them ever knowing you were even there.

Will you take down your enemies with brute-force? Covert espionage and infiltration? Or will you use propaganda to influence the citizens of the city and overthrow the controlling powers? Satellite Reign will be released on Windows, Mac OS and Linux.”

This game is powered by Unity, so it will be easier for them to put it across multiple platforms. Their stretch goals currently only include getting the original Syndicate composer to join the team. I hope they consider consoles at some point. With a little less than a month left and almost a third of their goal already met I expect them to announce more stretch goals later.

They actually have in game assets shown/running in their trailer so definitely check it out, the art style really is capturing that dystopian, cyberpunk-esque look and feel. They’re promising a truly open world experience with tons of options on how you’ll free the masses from the shackles of the future corporations.
